Customs Brew Bar
Customs is at the heart of the capital’s coffee scene, and a trip to Wellington wouldn’t be complete without a stop here.
52 Fitzherbert Street, Petone, Lower Hutt
Tucked down an industrial side street away from the bustle of Petone, you’ll discover a charming mint-green villa. The aroma of coffee will guide you through its doors and into a warm and welcoming space.
The House of Good Fortune is full of surprises. Home to the Good Fortune Coffee Co., this is where they roast, grind, and bag fair trade coffee beans for distribution around New Zealand.
The cosy house doubles as a busy and inviting café. Enjoy a cup of coffee brewed from beans roasted just metres away. Regulars file in to pick up bags of beans, sip on their favourite coffee, and lunch on cabinet food made daily. The cakes range from small and garnished with flowers, to generous and smothered with icing. The pies are hearty and handmade, and there’s a big focus on vegetarian and vegan fare.
The House of Good Fortune exudes retro charm. Covering the walls is an eclectic mix of offbeat vintage poster art, odd-ball objects, Catholic kitsch, and colour. This light-hearted approach to interior design is supported by the big welcome you receive when you walk in the door. No one takes themselves seriously here, and service is efficient and friendly.
Founders Matt Wilson and Freya Atkinson moved the coffee roastery into the villa in 2021. With years of hospitality experience between them, the team has built a reputation for creating whimsical and memorable cafés across Wellington. They pride themselves on producing 100% certified fair trade coffee and investing in the happiness of their staff. They apply the same ethos to their sister café, Miss Fortune’s in Seaview.
