Housed in a beautifully restored 1887 wharf store, Shed 5 has carved out a reputation as one of Wellington’s premier seafood restaurants. This harbourside establishment is all class and style. The food is fresh, modern, and inspired by the sea. With an in-house fishmonger, every inch of the fish is used and respected. “We buy it in whole and utilise every single bit of it,” says Astrid Cottereau, operations manager. “There’s no wastage,”

Shed 5’s head chef, Geoff Ngan crafts a menu that highlights local produce and is generous in portion. “Our food is approachable, honest and wholesome,” says Geoff. There’s no need for countless sides here. Each meal is complete and meticulously balanced. An impressive wine list pairs well with the fresh flavours and showcases local favourites and overseas staples.

Inside the restaurant, tall windows flood the space with natural light, and white tablecloths create an elegant and sophisticated atmosphere. Visitors can sit by the water and watch the boats come and go from the port as they dine. The space offers plenty of nods to its rich history as a working shed. Wrought-iron gates stand between the bar and dining area, the lofty ceilings show signs of where wool bales were winched. The hardwood floors are scuffed by a century of boots.

Geoff and Astrid have both served impressive tenures at Shed 5, witnessing multiple owners and all the whims of the economy. Richard Waru, the fishmonger, has been in the kitchen since the restaurant opened in 1992. The longevity of the business proves they have a winning formula. “We’re trying to offer something that’s really classical and classy,” says Geoff. “Something that stands the test of time,” adds Astrid.

It’s fair to say, seaside dining and good food are timeless.
