Boulcott Street Bistro

Boulcott Street Bistro has been a well-loved part of Wellington’s restaurant scene since 1991. While the menu has kept up with the changing times, the experience has remained steadfast: excellent service and a welcoming atmosphere. It’s a perfect spot for celebration meals, family gatherings, after-work drinks, or a romantic evening out.

“We’re very much a Wellington restaurant,” says managing partner Fergus Trengrove. “Over the years we’ve created a nice balance of quality and casualness in an environment that’s comfortable to a wide range of people.”

The ever-changing menu is a blend of classic French bistro dishes and contemporary Kiwi cuisine. The chefs regularly source exceptional local meat and produce. Be sure to try signature dishes like French onion soup, crème brûlée, and the lunchtime T-bone steak. If wine is your thing, you’re in luck. The wine list features over 150 bottles, from New Zealand’s best vineyards to rare and exceptional vintages from all around the world.

With a white picket fence and fanciful turret, the 1870s cottage is juxtaposed with multistorey buildings and a bustling motorway. Inside is a similar mixture of past and present. Traditional white tablecloths and dark wood floors contrast with colourful modern art.

While the setting is sophisticated, the dining experience is up to you. “People can come in and have an entrée and a glass of wine, or they can do the full three courses if they want,” says Fergus.

Bookings are available for lunch and early dinners, but after 6pm it’s walk-ins only. If no tables are available when you arrive, enjoy a drink at the cosy bar while you wait.
