About the park

Sitting at the base of Mount Climie is Tunnel Gully Recreation Area, in the heart of Pakuratahi Forest. It’s a popular recreation spot offering many mountain biking and walking trails. It follows pine forests, native bush, and an interesting mix of terrain. The shallow waters of Collins Stream are ideal for cooling off during summer.

The area is named ‘Tunnel Gully’ because of its strong historic link to the Remutaka railway line. The nearby 253 metre-long Mangaroa Tunnel was built between 1875 to 1877. In 1955 the Remutaka Tunnel replaced it. The trails in the area provide a direct link to the popular Remutaka Cycle Trail and Kaitoke Hill via the State Highway 2 underpass.

Getting there

Tunnel Gully is at the end of Plateau Road in Te Marua, 10 minutes north of Upper Hutt. The car park is well signposted.

There are regular bus and train services to the area. Timetables are available from Metlink.
