Alongside furniture, there’s clothing, décor and knick-knacks from the 1950s and beyond. Art deco dresses sit alongside beach umbrellas, bright ceramics and old tools.

Take Me Back is a regular stop for set designers, prop buyers, and interior decorators. Here you’ll find everything you need to make your space pop.

Shipwreck Trading

Shipwreck Trading is a treasure chest of marine salvage and collectables. You’ll find everything from furniture to brass fixtures and fittings, along with obscure seafarer’s uniforms. There’s old, new and everything in between. You could spend hours rifling through all the oddities. Regardless of your budget, you’ll find something to take home. The best sellers here are the copper and brass light fittings. Small trinkets and ship models provide the perfect gifts.

Upstairs, there’s a gallery featuring local exhibitions. You can also experience a virtual reality submarine simulation in-store.

The Merry Go Round

The Merry Go Round specialises in industrial furniture and light fixtures, collectables and vintage workwear. It’s an eclectic store and a great place to fossick for vintage and secondhand treasures.

Film industry prop buyers and interior designers are among the store’s loyal clientele. The owner has a keen eye for quirky objects and can source even the most elusive item.

Open Saturdays only so be sure to plan ahead.

Helter Skelter Vintage

Unit 1/113 Gracefield Road, Lower Hutt

Helter Skelter is packed to the ceiling with a jumble of secondhand objects. Housed in a huge warehouse in Seaview, it’s the type of place you come to rummage for hours. There are bins overflowing with ornaments, old toys, and collector’s items. Vintage and retro clothing hangs from the rafters and boxes are bursting at the seams with old records and books.

Helter Skelter is a manifestation of the owner’s passion for collecting. He has spent decades accumulating the objects inside the warehouse.

This small record store is packed with a huge stock of rare and interesting vinyl. It’s speciality: secondhand New Zealand and Japanese vinyl pressings.

This is a proper old-school record store. You’ll find used singles, brand-new records, and dozens of CDs and cassette tapes. There’s also a large collection of music-related merchandise to choose from.

The owner has a huge back-catalogue of music knowledge and is able to help with obscure record requests.
