Looking up to the stands and roof of the St James Theatre, the red seats and gold fixtures can be seen, as well as the very large light on the roof.

Wellington Historic Theatre Tours

Step behind the velvet curtain and explore two of the city’s most beloved performance spaces. St James Theatre and The Opera House are opening their doors for an intimate tour of these Wellington icons.

Led by expert guides, this tour takes you on a journey through more than a century of theatre magic. Tread in the footsteps of legendary performers. Marvel at the details of these heritage-listed buildings. From opulent foyers and ornate auditoriums to backstage corridors brimming with history. You’ll see these theatres from a fresh perspective.

Your tour will start at The Opera House, with its checkerboard marble floors and grand staircase. You'll then continue across the road to the lavish St James Theatre. A story of Wellington emerges as you move from room to room and out onto the centre stage. Tours typically run for around two hours. Whether you’re a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply a lover of the arts, this tour offers a rare glimpse into Wellington’s cultural heart.

The small size of the tour group means you have time to soak up the energy of these historic venues. Ask your guide questions and get snap-happy with your camera. Take a seat in the green room or pirouette across the stage. These century-old buildings come to life and reveal their rich history to keep you entertained. There might even be a ghost story or two to keep you on your toes.
