The remote Wainuiomata Coast is a great place to spend a day exploring. Just a short walk or bike ride along the jagged shoreline will lead you to Turakirae Head. Here, the rocky terraces and harsh natural environment provide a thriving habitat for native flora and fauna. You can see banded dotterels, Caspian terns, skinks, and geckos. Every winter around 500 fur seals settle in to see out the cooler months. These marine mammals may appear friendly, but make sure you keep a safe distance. After you’ve met the locals, continue along a coastal trail to the historic Baring Head Lighthouse. On a clear day, its vantage point provides views across to the South Island.
Wainuiomata’s Jurassic-like Remutaka Forest Park is full of beautiful bush walks. Trek through lush landscapes on short day walks, or camp overnight in the Ōrongorongo Valley.
